Cranial Orthotics at Advanced Prosthetics

At Advanced Prosthetics, we specialize in providing advanced cranial orthotic solutions to infants with positional head shape deformities, such as plagiocephaly and brachycephaly. With multiple locations across North and South Carolina, including our Columbia, SC office, we are dedicated to offering personalized care and cutting-edge technology tailored to each patient's unique needs.

What Are Cranial Orthotics?

Cranial orthotics, commonly known as cranial helmets or bands, are custom-molded devices designed to gently reshape a baby's skull. They are primarily used to treat non-synostotic positional head shape deformities, which occur when an infant's skull becomes flattened due to prolonged pressure on one side of the head. These deformities can lead to visible asymmetry in the skull and face.

Conditions Treated

  • Positional Plagiocephaly
Characterized by flattening on one side of the back of the head, often accompanied by forward displacement of the ear and forehead on the same side.
  • Brachycephaly
A condition where the back of the head becomes flattened, causing the head to widen and shorten.
  • Scaphocephaly
An elongated head shape resulting from premature closure of the sagittal suture.

Crainial Orthotics Treatment Process

1

Initial Assessment

A certified orthotist conducts a thorough evaluation of the infant's head shape using advanced imaging techniques, such as 3D scanning, to create a precise digital model of the skull.

2

Custom Fabrication

Based on the digital model, a custom cranial orthosis is fabricated using lightweight, breathable materials. Modern technologies, such as 3D printing, allow for highly customized helmets that are tailored to the specific needs of the infant.

3

Fitting and Adjustment

The cranial orthosis is fitted to the infant's head, ensuring comfort and proper alignment. Adjustments are made periodically throughout the treatment to accommodate skull growth and enhance the reshaping process.

4

Ongoing Monitoring

Regular follow-up appointments are scheduled to monitor progress, make necessary adjustments, and ensure the orthosis continues to fit properly as the infant grows.

Benefits of Cranial Orthotics

  • Effective Reshaping: Gently redirects skull growth to achieve a more symmetrical head shape.
  • Comfortable Design: Modern materials and technologies ensure a lightweight and breathable fit, reducing the risk of skin irritation.
  • Customizable Options: Infants and parents can choose from a variety of designs and colors, adding a personal touch to the treatment.
  • Proven Results: Early intervention with cranial orthotics has been shown to be effective in treating positional head shape deformities.
