Statistics It is important for you to know that you are not alone in your rehabilitation process as a new amputee. The number of people living with an amputation is rising in the United States, particularly as a result of diabetic and dysvascular conditions.
Healing Rates The recovery rate after amputation is different for each person. There are no two surgeries or people that experience the same healing times and rates.
Post Operative Care After the amputation there are several ways of dressing the residual limb. The most common way of dressing the limb is with the use of simple gauze dressings. This is typically done in the operative room by your physician immediately following surgery. These dressings will then be changed periodically.
Definitive Prosthesis Receiving your definitive prosthesis is a similar process to when you were given your temporary prosthesis.
Determining the Proper Sock Fit The proper sock fit can be determined by where the limb is positioned in the prosthesis when fully donned in the prosthesis. The kneecap should “float in the round opening in the front of the prosthesis.
Trouble Shooting If there are any problems, please call us and schedule an appointment so we can examine the problems and fix them. It is important to be prompt for your appointment and not to “walk-in” as the practitioner that knows you and your prosthetic history may not be available if you do not have an appointment.
Assistive Devices Throughout your rehabilitation process, you may be prescribed different assistive devices to help you transfer, walk, and exercise.
