Post-Operative

Prosthetic post-operative equipment—such as shrinkers, rigid dressings, limb protectors, and mobility aids—helps reduce swelling, protect the residual limb, and prepare it for prosthetic fitting during the healing and rehabilitation process.

Prosthetic post-operative equipment plays a crucial role in preparing the residual limb for a prosthesis and supporting healing after an amputation. Here's a breakdown of the most commonly used items, their functions, and their importance in recovery:

Post-Operative Equipment for Prosthetics

Shrinkers (Compression Sock)

  • Purpose: Reduces swelling, helps shape the residual limb, and prepares it for prosthetic fitting.
  • When Used: After sutures are removed and the wound has started healing.
  • Types:
    • Elastic shrinkers (pull-on style)
    • Wraps (e.g., ACE wraps, used immediately post-op)
  • Benefits:
    • Controls edema
    • Promotes better limb shaping for socket fit

Rigid or Removable Post-Operative Dressings (RRDs)

  • Purpose: Protects the surgical site, controls swelling, and supports limb shaping.
  • Types:
    • Immediate Post-Operative Prosthesis (IPOP)
    • Removable Rigid Dressing (RRD)
  • Benefits:
    • Protects against accidental bumps
    • Promotes early mobility with proper supervision

Limb Protectors

  • Purpose: Cushioned sleeves worn to protect the residual limb while healing.
  • Use: For patients not yet ready for rigid dressings or prosthetic fitting.
  • Benefit: Prevents injury and desensitizes the limb.

Residual Limb Support Devices

  • Purpose: Supports the limb when sitting or lying down to prevent contractures.
  • Examples: Limb elevation pillows, stump boards (for wheelchairs)

Desensitization and Skin Care Tools

  • Purpose: Prepares the limb for prosthetic use by reducing hypersensitivity.
  • Tools:
    • Massage rollers
    • Soft cloths or textured materials
  • Skin Care:
    • Gentle soaps, moisturizers
    • Inspection mirrors for wound monitoring

Mobility Aids

  • Purpose: Promote safe movement during healing and early rehab.
  • Examples:
    • Crutches
    • Walkers
    • Wheelchairs

Physical Therapy & Stump Conditioning Tools

  • Purpose: Improve strength, range of motion, and prevent contractures.
  • Tools:
    • Resistance bands
    • Balance boards
    • Stretching aids
